Area Near Totnes

Details

An experienced provider who has recently been approved to offer one short break or respite place in addition to one long term placement (this service user is a sociable young lady with mild learning disabilities and cerebral palsy and has lived with the provider since she was a child (approximately 14 years)). The provider also lives with her 13 year old daughter and 2 friendly dogs. The provider enjoys an active lifestyle and would be happy to involve the person in family life and excursions. She has recent experience of teaching her service user various independence skills and this would benefit a person who would like to be part of a young family and would like to learn the skills necessary to enable him/her to live more independently.

The situation is not suitable for a person with mobility difficulties as there are stairs to the bedroom. The family home has a light, open aspect and is situated in a quiet village near Totnes. Details

This is a new opportunity for a short break on the outskirts of Plymouth. The provider’s family of two teenage daughters and a learning disabled man, who lives with them long term, have lived here for a number of years and are active in the local community. The two daughters are volunteers with Mencap and the provider has many years experience as a nurse and more recently with the man who shares his life with them.

The family lives in a large comfortable house with a garden which faces the main road. There is a lounge, bedroom and large family kitchen downstairs; the bathroom and family bedrooms are upstairs.

The provider is now offering short breaks to someone who would like to stay for a few days once a month or a regular night during the week. This would be ideal for someone with learning disabilities to benefit from being with other people and to learn new skills. It would also suit anyone whose relatives need a regular break in the week. There are all sorts of things that people can do with the family like going to Cornwall for the day or the beaches nearby or the Barbican during the summer and in the winter joining in with family activities at home.

There are steps into and around the house; the rooms are light and airy, the colours are contrasting and the acoustics are good. Anyone who is interested would be able to find out for themselves through an introductory visit if they felt the house was accessible for them.
