"SWAPS makes it possible for me to be a good carer. They are always available but not in your face. They get what it is like to have someone living with you and they want the best for the service user, just like us."
Shared Lives providers are individuals and families who provide care and accommodation in their own homes for a vulnerable or disabled adult. Providers can provide up to a maximum of three places in their home. They have a variety of skills, experience and knowledge and may be able to support service users with very complex or demanding needs.
Providers offer:
- The service user to live as independently as possible whilst sharing in normal family life
- Safety and security
- Enable the service user to learn daily living skills and to become more independent where appropriate
- Companionship and a stimulating environment
- Meet the care and support needs of the service user in a friendly, personal and respectful way
Our Shared Lives providers are spread throughout Devon and Cornwall and are supported by a Shared Lives Coordinator (SLC). SLCs have three main roles:
- To manage the referral and placement process - the "mixing and matching" process between service users, providers and other people who live itn the providers home
- To assess, monitor and review providers to ensure that SWAPS meets the requirements of the National Minimum Standards for Adult Placement Schemes
- To support providers in their role through regular telephone and face to face contact, training and meetings
SLCs are required to make a minimum of four visits a year under the current regulations.
